(AVMA, 2002) A Personal Experience Surgery can be a traumatic experience both physically and psychologically. Several years ago I underwent a moderately serious surgery. The recovery was quite difficult and my life had to be put on hold. My mood changed and I was no longer willing to put on a happy face. I appreciated the kindness of my visitors, but I felt alone in my pain. After my return home, I went straight to bed. The next morning I felt a moistness on my face as I awoke. I opened my eyes to see my dog staring at me with an almost human expression. The concern in his face was obvious. At that point, it was almost as if I could feel the serotonin rush to my brain. I smiled for the first time in weeks. Suddenly I felt the need to comfort him, and my pain shifted to the background. That marked a turning point in my recovery. As I sat up, and then began to stand I would see him just checking on me. He began to insist that I play with him, no matter how I felt. I felt a strong sense that he knew what was going on and was trying to take care of me, the same way I had taken care of him for many years. My mood to be alone eventually changed, and I began to relate to family and friends again. Action Steps and Concluding Thoughts It should not be assumed that pet therapy should stand alone as a stress management strategy. Although it has been found that pet therapy can be more effective than some stress reducing medicines, this does not imply one should be substituted for the other. Instead, a holistic approach to stress reduction stands the best chance of success. Pet therapy can be a valuable part of that approach for most people. One can begin pet therapy as simply as petting a dog, feeding birds or watching fish swim. This is a perfect time to remind ourselves of the other stress relieving techniques we need to employ for the rest of the day. Those with health issues should consult a physician first, especially if they are not already used to being around animals. Those considering pet ownership should not enter into it rashly. First, it must be determined if pet ownership is allowed or is restricted within their community. Then, research should be done to match a pet to the owners living situation and personality. Also, the requirements for taking care of the pet must be understood and budgeted for. Some people may find that owning pet is not for them. Taking these simple steps can greatly reduce the likelihood that the pet will cause additional stress. It will also insure a better life for the animal. A pet cant substitute for the human interaction we all need. That is why a person may still need other types of therapy to reduce long-term stress. A pet does provide several proven beneficial elements, like unconditional love and exercise, which can help us benefit from those other therapies. Loose sheets of paper are easy to lose and its easy to tear out the wrong page in a spiral notebook. 2. Have more than one pen or pencil with you. 3. Sit close to the podium or wherever most of the speaking will take place. 4. Have a clear idea of what you plan to do with the notes youre taking. The purpose of a conference-goer is not the same as that of a club secretary. 5. Take advantage of the kindness of others. For example, if youre taking notes for a club or a business meeting, pass around a sheet for attendance. Ask officers and members to give you copies of their reports and motions. 6. Follow the agenda. Begin by noting the place of the meeting and the time at which it begins. Take things down as they happen. You can always rearrange things in a more logical order when you type up your notes. 7. Write down the exact words for motions. 8. Write legibly. Write as fast as you can, but dont scribble. If you dont know shorthand, youll need to use your own symbols and abbreviations. Dont be too creative. What you meant by AGMP may not be so obvious the day after the meeting. 9. Be accurate. A Too-Personal Rant on Fundamental Attribution Error It's very easy to misunderstand what other people do. This is, in fact, the basis of a great many human conflicts. I am aware that I do this with some frequency, and am in fact very much in the middle of slandering a particular person presently for attributive reasons. The specifics of the case are illustrative, and the exercise might be helpful to me, too. My first contact with "Bob" was in my freshman seminar class, where I pegged him as a pretentious expletive-deleted. Then, thanks to the devious workings of the Simon's Rock social network, I found myself opposite him in what could aptly be termed a 'bizarre love triangle.' Suddenly, my dislike of him was animated with a fire of jealousy. I literally began keeping a mental catalogue of all the ways I had convicted him of being a "bad person." Even after the immediate motive had passed, I continued keeping track of his legendary misdeeds, gossiping freely. I find myself making statements like, "What do you expect, it's Bob..." I have clearly made the connection between his actions and his personality. I obviously have difficulty putting myself in his shoes, but I will try to do so. Going back to fresh sem, I can see why his arguments stretched out and became increasingly pretentious: they were poor arguments, but he, like so many other people, was unwilling to let them die, probably as a matter of pride. This is an understandable, if not downright familiar, action. Sometimes we know who and what we are, but it’s impossible to wear an identity without becoming what we pretend to be or bullied into silence allowing ourselves to be made a victim to oppression. In this essay I’m comparing the authors of â€Å"How it Feel to Be Colored Me by Zora Hurston, and How to Tame a Wild Tongue by Gloria Anzaldua. Gloria Anzaldua became a victim of oppression by accepting society expectations of the Chicano culture. Meanwhile, Zora Hurston accepted who she is despite who people perceived her as because of her skin color. These two authors defends their personal identities through their cultures in separate ways. In the story How to Tame a Wild Tongue, Gloria Anzaldua feels that the way someone is cannot be controlled it can only be erased; she states â€Å"Wild tongues can’t be tamed, they can only be cut out† (Page 31). Anzaldua was against losing her accent and had an issue with putting her first language as a second. She would rebel as a child when told not to speak Spanish, so she struggled with changing and adapting to the American culture. She believed her culture the â€Å"Chicano† culture needed to differ from others with a secret language they can be able to communicate amongst each other. â€Å"Chicano Spanish need to identify ourselves as a distinct people. We needed a language which we could communicate with ourselves, a secret language† (Page 32). By creating their own slang allows them to connect their identity and communicate reality, values, and things they have in common. Yet, Zora Hurston in the story â€Å"How it feels to be Colored Me† expresses the way she was created doesn’t bother her nor makes her sadden. â€Å"I am not tragically colored. There is no great sorrow dammed up in my soul, nor lurking behind my eyes. I don’t mind at all (Page 145).† Unlike other colored people she doesn’t hate herself for the color of her skin, she’s proud to be created as the person she is without regret. Although, she’s constantly reminded of her culture background it fails to bring her integrity down, because ancestors paid the price of her free start in society, and shouldn’t stop to reflect on choices that wasn’t hers. â€Å"Someone is always at my elbow reminding me that I am the grand-daughter of slaves. It fails to register depression with me. I am off to a flying start and must I not halt to look back and weep. Slavery is the price I paid for civilization, and the choice was not with me† (Pages 145-146). Zora Hurston doesn’t consider herself a part of her culture who uses their skin color for a bad excuse for why they’re in negative life situations. â€Å"I do not belong to the sobbing school of Negrohood who holds that nature somehow has given them a lowdown dirty deal and whose feelings are hurt about it (Page 145).
